TROLL LOAD OF TROUBLE FOR BENN

- BY CHRIS MCKENNA

CONOR BENN admits dealing with social media trolls makes him think he would have been better off cooking on the barbecue Down Under than looking to fire himself to a world title.

Benn (above) believes that having a famous fighting father means he has to deal with more online abuse than most.

That is why he reached out to Campbell Hatton – son of Ricky – ahead of his recent debut to offer some advice.

But Benn sometimes wishes he stayed in Australia with his dad, former two-weight world champion Nigel, rather than following him into the sport.

“I reached out because I like Campbell,” said Benn, who takes on Samuel Vargas on Saturday in a welterweight clash at the Copper Box in London.

“I saw comments people were making about him, it pains me to see it. Some of the stuff I see makes me sick to the core, it really got me going.

“There is such vile stuff on Twitter from real scumbags and it gets my back up.

“I remember how I felt when I was getting the same treatment so for him to be getting it now, it upsets me.

“If I am honest, if I could go back now, I probably would have stayed in Australia cooking on the barbecue with my dad, enjoying life and not having to worry.”

Unbeaten Benn is heading into his 18th professional fight this weekend against Colombian Vargas, who floored Amir Khan (above) in 2018 before losing on points.

The Essex-trained fighter is improving in every bout and his promoter Eddie Hearn is starting to talk up world title fights, but Benn still wonders if he made the right career choice.

He added: “I do sometimes think I’m mad for not choosing that life, I really mean that.

“I’ve just got to win a world title once, just once. Then I’ll be a very happy man.”
