A Quick-thinking train driver prevented a potential tragedy by avoiding a collision with a burning car abandoned on the track.

The close escape happened near Bellerena, Co Derry, on Monday night and is being investigated by police.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: “I am so relieved to hear passengers and crew are all safe.

“It is unimaginable to think what could have happened had it not been for the prompt action of the driver and crew. I want to express my gratitude to them and to the emergency services.”

Translink confirmed yesterday the line between Coleraine and Derry had reopened.

A spokesperson said a substitute bus was provided instead of the 7.38am train to Coleraine, but “no other services should be affected at this time”.

Ms Mallon added: “I am deeply concerned and troubled by the incident near Bellarena. The train travelling from Belfast to Derry was brought thankfully to a stop by the train driver who acted quickly before the train reached the burning car on the track.

“I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the PSNI.”

Translink Group chief Chris Conway said: “The train driver reacted quickly and thankfully brought the train to a stop safely, short of where the car was burning.

FORTUNATE

“The train crew ensured all safety procedures were followed with the incident swiftly reported and emergency services attended the scene.

“The train returned to Coleraine Station, where six passengers got off safely for onward connections by road. It is very fortunate no-one has been injured in this incident.

“Our staff continue to provide vital

services for all communities across Northern Ireland and we utterly condemn this attack which had the potential for very serious consequences.

“Translink will be working with the PSNI to investigate this incident.”

The Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident at 8.56pm on Monday. Group Commander David Doherty added: “One appliance from Limavady was sent to the scene after a car was put on to the train tracks and set on fire.

“The fire destroyed the car and damaged part of the crossing and the scene was left with NI Railways.”

Police are appealing for information after the incident at the level crossing at Limestone Road.

Chief Inspector Mclidowney described it as “reckless endangerment to life” and praised the “heroics of our colleagues in the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service”.

The officer said: “Our investigation is currently under way to establish the circumstances into this incident.

“We are appealing for any witnesses to contact police quoting serial number 1945 of the 12/04/21.” A report can be submitted at psni.police.uk/ makeareport/ or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org/.
