Wiggles: Sainsbury’s

Ruth says: “Everyone enjoyed this cake because it had delicious chocolate, great flavour and a soft sponge.”

Cress says: “Wiggles wowed. I could have eaten it from top to tail if Mum had let me.”

£6, serves 14 SCOFF SCORE: 4/5

Curly: Tesco

Ruth says: “Great value for money and looks OK. But way too sweet for adults.”

Rufus says: “Pretty yummy. It’s a good thing if it’s too sweet for adults – it means there is more for us kids.”

£6 (£5.45 with Clubcard), serves 12 SCOFF SCORE: 2/5

Colin: M&S

Ruth says: “We did a blind taste so Rufus and Cress didn’t know this was the original. But they confirmed Colin is the top caterpillar.”

Cress says: “It was really chocolatey and the sponge was super soft. It wasn’t as sweet as the others which is good ’cos you can eat lots more.” £7, serves 10 SCOFF SCORE: 5/5

Cecil: Waitrose

Ruth says: “Cloyingly sweet, this has 34% of your daily sugar compared to 24% with Morrison’s.” Rufus says: “It looks cool and I loved the white chocolate face and feet. His pointy tail made him look like a grub rather than a caterpillar. It was really sweet so one little bite and I’d had enough.” £7, serves 12 SCOFF SCORE: 2/5

Colin has 15 million sales under his belt since his launch 30 years ago but rival caterpillars in other stores are contesting

Clyde: Asda

Ruth says: “Another cake that disintegrated when it was cut, and this was even drier than the one from Morrisons.”

Cress says: “The feet and face didn’t taste great but I still loved the cake.” his crown. M&S’S trademark infringement claim against Aldi goes on but we staged the only contest that matters: taste.

Curious: Co-op

Ruth says: “Very much on the dry side, and has a rather gormless face.”

Cress says: “The feet were fondant which isn’t as tasty as white chocolate. I needed a glass of water after a taste because it was too crumbly. Sorry, but you’re not my favourite.”

£7, serves 12 SCOFF SCORE: 1/5

Morris: Morrisons

Ruth says: “Morris was so hard to cut, slices fell apart until there was a pile of chocolate. No good if you want to wrap it and pop it in a party bag.” Rufus says: “It was so dry, when I tried to pick it up it made a mess of my T-shirt but bits that made my mouth tasted ace.” £6, serves 12 SCOFF SCORE: 3/5
