A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of mum-of-two Jennie Poole.

Gavin Murphy, from Coultry Drive in Ballymun, North Dublin, is accused of killing the 24-year-old at her home on Saturday.

Dressed in a blue hoody, black tracksuit bottoms and grey trainers, he sat silently during the hearing.

Detective Sergeant Damien Mangan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said that at 11.17pm on Saturday night, Murphy was arrested.

He was charged with murder at 12.04am on Sunday. Murphy did not respond.

The accused made no application for bail and Judge Gerard Jones pointed out that an application for bail in a murder case can only be made in the High Court.

Murphy has been granted free legal aid due to the fact he was not working. His solicitor Michael Hennessy said the accused is required to have a mandatory 14-day quarantine in custody due to Covid-19 before applying for bail but he added that he intended to do that.

Friends of Ms Poole and family members were in court for the brief hearing. The judge remanded Murphy in custody to appear again by video link at Cloverhill District Court on Friday at 10am.

The judge also directed he be provided with all appropriate medical attention in custody.

Healthcare worker Jennie was taken by ambulance to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown but pronounced dead a short time later.

Jennie lived with her children, a son aged four and seven-year-old daughter, on the first floor of a duplex building in Melville Drive, Finglas.

A Gofundme page set up to help with the cost of Jennie’s funeral and to support her children had raised around £50,000 by last night. Jennie Varszegi, who organised the fundraiser, said: “On April 17, Jennie was tragically and suddenly taken from the world, leaving behind her mam, dad, brothers, sister, family and her two precious babies.

“Jennie was a fun, loving, happy and hard-working 24-year-old mother who lived for her babies.

“The news of the tragic passing of Jennie was a major shock to our community and we hope everyone can pull together to show the support and how much she was loved and try to ease this burden on the family.”
