What an excellent picture of Jimi Hendrix by Henny Carter last Tuesday – and how good she looks at 79!

Sylvie Smith Bexleyheath, South East London

Ed: Judging by the youthful complexion of many of our readers, I think we may have discovered that painting and gardening are indeed the secret to eternal youth!

Further to your stories regarding scams, I am a very elderly lady (born in the 1920s) and I live alone in a warden-controlled block. I recently had a phone call from a very posh-sounding man who said he was police, telling me my bank account had been used by a carer. But my daughter collects my pension and went to the bank and found my money was safe.

I am not wealthy. I started work at 14 in an office and was paid 75p for a five-and-a-half day week and lived through the war. I still do as much as I can and cook myself a plain hot meal every day but this phone call left me very afraid.

Mrs E B Raynes, Cambridge

Ed: How clever of you to out-fox your scammer, Mrs Raynes. Your frightening case highlights the importance of always double-checking directly with the bank. I have come to the conclusion that unknown callers should always be treated as guilty until proven innocent!

“When New Ross singers donned attire, We sang to amuse, and inspire, Though now we’re Covid’ed and sorely divided, When next we’ll meet up, and ‘enchoir’.”

Michael Fottrill New Ross, Co Wexford, Ireland

Ed: I do hope you’re all back singing soon, Michael. My daughter is badly missing being part of her school choir, and it seems doubly harsh that something so good for us, should be so slow to return.
