LIARS AND SNAKES WHO HAVE SPAT IN THE FACE OF ALL FOOTBALL LOVERS
The media can’t stop this but you can - with your mouths and feet
FOR those who might have expected better from Liverpool Football Club’s owners, remember they tried to trademark the name of the city, for goodness sake.
That should have been a great, big, clunking clue to their greed. And, sadly, to their utter disregard for the fans who lined the streets of Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp came back from Madrid with the European Cup a couple of years ago.
This is what is fundamentally sad, if not unsurprising, about this whole, blasted thing. Any pretence the owners of these six clubs care a jot about the loyal, often local, fanbase has been stripped away.
They are only interested in the worldwide consumer, those with the American dollar, the Chinese yuan, those who will happily pay to watch Manchester United play Barcelona every other Tuesday.
But we knew that anyway, surely. Apparently, the Big Six owners refer to the long-standing – often long-suffering – supporters as ‘legacy fans’. They are more interested in fans of the future.
It is despicable but hardly shocking.
What matters now is the reaction.
And we are not talking about reaction on Twitter, on Facebook, on the telly, on the radio. Judged through the prism of social media and the traditional media, the European Super League should be a non-starter.
Trawl online as extensively as you want and you are unlikely to find a positive comment about the grim project.
But what will happen when next season’s Premier League begins – and there WILL be a Premier League beginning on time – and big crowds are allowed back into grounds?
Is the uniform social media outrage a reality? If so, do not turn up at Anfield, at Old Trafford, at the Etihad, at the Emirates, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, at Stamford Bridge.
The pandemic restrictions might be eased gradually but these rotten owners are not going to fill their arenas with fans from abroad any time soon. And leaving shiny, billion-pound stadiums desolate would be the most powerful language these characters could understand.
Or those that somehow do feel the need to go could make their feelings known.
For all its vaunted power, the keyboards and keypads of social media cannot inflict serious damage on this preposterous scheme.
The mouths and feet of the footballing masses can. Boycotting the Big Six sounds outlandish. But it might be the only thing that makes them see sense.
We will remove our flags from the Kop. We can’t give our support to a club that puts greed before the integrity of the game
