IT’S ALL GONE TO PLOT..

The Snake Oil Six should now grovel to those who really are important – the fans

- BY ANDY DUNN Chief Sports Writer @andydunnmirror

WELCOME back the Big Six, good riddance to the bad rubbish that is the Big Six.

Let’s not have any more of that nonsense title.

The Slippery Six? Fine. The Small-time Six? Just as good. How about the Snake Oil Six? That might be even better.

But NEVER again call them the Big Six, a label they boastfully brandished like some tawdry, diamond-encrusted wrist watch.

Because even before this despicable European Super League was able to take its first miserable, moneygrabbing, meaningful – sorry, meaningless – breath, there was only ever going to be one burning question for the halfwitted half-dozen.

How the hell were they going to slither their oily way out of this one?

How the hell were they going to save their own skins when forced to ditch this grievous insult of an idea?

Thankfully, they seem to have simply held up their grasping hands. Guilty, as charged, of naked greed.

Time off for confessing to their crime, sure. A bit of leniency on our part, a bit of compassion in the sentencing, sure. We all make mistakes, after all.

And the Lord loves a repentant sinner.

But let’s see just how repentant they are.

Let’s have no more cosy cartels breaking bread and

hatching heinous plans in swish Manhattan restaurants.

Let’s have no more VIP breakaway groups plotting away from the Premier League collective.

Let’s have no more whining about their share of the gargantuan TV deals just

because, well, they think they are big.

Let’s have no more veiled threats – and unveiled, hideously ugly threats such as this one – about going off and having their own little invite-only party.

Let’s have no

more thinking you are something else because you have a zillion followers on Instagram, Tiktok, or whatever, or because you have the world’s best noodle deal.

Let’s have no more Big Six. But actually, here is what would be really Big. If this almost hilarious reverse ferret is actually because these avaricious characters have, preposterously unlikely as it seems, accepted football is for the fans, then do more the fans.

There is your penance, right there. Stop ripping fans off, stop taking kit money that means parents have to pay hundreds of pounds for strips, stop selling your club’s soul and its supporters to TV companies, stop thinking only about the next buck.

Fat chance, I know, but you can only hope – and they SHOULD have to travel a road to redemption.

It was a journey Ed Woodward, preserving a vestige of honour, knew was an impossible one for him.

But how can John W Henry at Liverpool talk again about the history and traditions of a wonderful club’s fanbase?

How can Daniel Levy speak of any noble Spurs intentions?

None of those responsible for this aberration should be able to look the loyal supporter in the eye for a very long time.

Most of them will manage it, no doubt. You don’t get where these people are without being shameless.

But they are going to need a better PR company than the one that told them they would only have to weather a storm in a teacup.

And what remains truly, truly breathtaking is that these socalled custodians of some of football’s great institutions obviously did not see the backlash coming.

Hence the most spectacular own goal in the recent history of the beautiful game.

Jurgen Klopp was right. These ARE great clubs, regardless of how dastardly their owners are, because the people make them great.

But let’s all treat that collective name with the disdain it deserves.

It is the Big Six – and OUT. And thank goodness for that.
