Killings ignited racial tensions
THESE US police killings sparked racial tensions.
Eric Garner: Died after being put in a chokehold by New York police while selling cigarettes in July 2014. Grand jury decided no charges.
Michael Brown: Violent national protests after the 18-year-old was shot at least seven times in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014. Officer Darren Wilson cleared of wrongdoing.
Tamir Rice: Police officer shot dead Tamir, 12, who had a toy gun in a Cleveland park in November 2014. No officers indicted.
Walter Scott: Unarmed and shot in the back running from police in Charleston, South Carolina, in April 2015. Ex-cop Michael Slager was found guilty of his death.
Alton Sterling: Alton’s death in July 2016 led to days of protests in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was killed after police responded to reports of a disturbance outside a shop. The two officers involved did not face criminal charges.
Philando Castile: Stopped by police in a routine check, driver Philando was killed reaching for his
licence in St Paul, Minnesota in July 2016, says his girlfriend who live-streamed the encounter.
Breonna Taylor: The medical technician, 26, was shot eight times when officers raided her home in Louisville, Kentucky, in March 2020.
Daunte Wright: Shot and killed in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, this month. Police say the officer mistakenly used a handgun not her Taser.
Adam Toledo: Video released after Adam, 13, was shot dead by police in an alley in Chicago on March 29 seems to show raising his hands.
