LEW MUST BE JOKING SOUTHGATE

- BY MIKE WALTERS

LEWIS DUNK cannot get a game for England but Tyrone Mings and Eric Dier can? Answers on a beer mat or crisp packet, please.

Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate has developed a blind spot where the

Brighton captain is concerned, so let’s help him out – down the M23, turn left and look out for the Amex mother spaceship after about three miles.

Dunk was faultless as Albion took a giant step towards Premier League safety and manager Graham Potter does not know what more his defensive rock can do to catch Southgate’s attention.

Potter (above with Dunk) said: “I can’t speak highly enough about Lewis – he’s been sensational all season.

“He’s probably not benefited from us getting the points we’ve deserved but, if you look at our defensive record, our clean sheets and his performances, they have been incredible.

“Lewis has grown up but you can’t control what other people say – all we can influence is how he plays for us and how he leads this team on the pitch.

“He can’t do anything more – this was the best I’ve seen him play, which is saying something, and he will get better.”

Potter became only the third coach, after David Moyes and Nuno Espirito Santo, to beat Leeds home and away this season.

Potter said: “I can never compete with Marcelo Bielsa in terms of what he’s done and what he’s achieved in the game – that’s impossible.

“The influence he’s had on the game is amazing, but it’s all about the guys on the pitch, and it’s the players who deserve enormous credit for our results.”

Potter expects to keep Danny Welbeck beyond his existing 12-month deal after the former England striker’s exquisite turn and finish clinched the Seagulls’ win.

He added: “You sit down and work out what’s right for everybody and that will happen with Danny at the end of the season.”
