Man Utd thugs score own goal

- G Chase, Reading, Berks

■ IT’S maddening the peaceful protest against Manchester United’s owners turned violent.

Most football fans support their stance against the Glazer family for backing the ill-fated European Super League – but after what happened on Sunday, with six police injured, that support has now evaporated.

There can be no room for such violence in the beautiful game.

On a positive note, as a Peterborough United supporter, well done to the board and manager Darren Ferguson sealing the Posh’s promotion to the Championship. Ashley Smith, March, Cambs

■ I was disgusted by the behaviour of some Manchester United supporters who stormed the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday.

Their cowardly actions towards police and officials won’t help the club or their cause.

It will be shame on them if the club has points deducted because the players and manager have got the club into a good position in the Premier League.

Whatever their grievance, there can be no excuse for such appalling

behaviour.

D Hughesdon, South London

■ I’m not a fan so have never really understood why football is described as the beautiful game. The ugly scenes of Manchester United supporters invading the pitch at Old Trafford, terrorising the staff and clashing with the police are reminiscent of the hooliganism of the Eighties and Nineties. This

sort of behaviour doesn’t reflect well on the integrity of the sport.

Other sporting events like cricket or rugby aren’t subject to such loutish acts of disruption and football fans should follow their example.

M Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ The mindless idiots who turned what was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration at Old Trafford into mayhem were not true football supporters.

They achieved one thing – they robbed genuine fans of a great game of football.

If they thought the Glazers would be intimidated by their actions, they are living in cloud cuckoo land. Instead they have just given them more bullets to fire.

Roger Grant Thurnscoe, South Yorks

■ As a Manchester United supporter, I’m disgusted at the actions of the thugs who broke into Old Trafford before the Liverpool game. They are not true fans.

It was totally out of order no matter what you think about the Glazers. The three points

should be given to Liverpool as it’s not their fault that the game had to be abandoned.

Phil Webb, Manchester

■ I was born within earshot of Old Trafford and have witnessed how the club has changed under the Glazer’s ownership.

They bought the club on the cheap without putting anything into it while raking in millions in profits. All they’ve done is saddle the club with more debt.

In its review, the Government must look into how football ownership works as it’s certainly not for the fans’ benefit – and they are the ones putting money into the club. A Howard, Manchester

■ The scenes at Old Trafford on Sunday night were a disgrace and do nothing to further the cause of Manchester United supporters who have legitimate concerns about the club’s owners.

By all means protest peacefully, but to throw bottles and missiles at police causing serious injuries only brings the club and the sport into disrepute.
