Lake District may be pods’ own country SO WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
TOURISTS could soon be charging around the Lake District in driverless electric pods as bosses try to slash pollution and traffic.
Of the 19 million visitors each year, 89% travel by car – accounting for a third of the national park’s total carbon emissions.
Sustainable transport spokeswoman Emma Moody says the pods could offer on-demand vehicle sharing and an option for visitors to travel the “last mile” to accommodation.
Visitors can see one at Windermere’s Brockhole Visitor Centre this month.
“We’d love to get people’s thoughts, including what journeys they would use a pod for, what speed they would be comfortable at, and when this might be a common form of transport,” Ms Moody said.
