FANS REJECT ‘EMPTY’ GLAZER WORDS

- BY JEREMY CROSS

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have angrily rejected the olive branch issued by the under-fire Glazer family.

Joel Glazer yesterday penned a grovelling 708-word letter to supporters in a bid to end the civil war at Old Trafford. The co-owner vowed to address supporters’ concerns in the hope of brokering a truce following the violent scenes that saw last weekend’s game with Liverpool called off.

Fans have protested over their unhappiness with the Glazer family in recent years, but it was United’s entry into the proposed

European Super League which sparked further fury.

And the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust hit back against the American billionaires last night, saying: “The response from Joel Glazer could in theory – and we emphasise in theory only – be a change in direction and approach by the owners versus their silence and disregard for communication over the last 16 years.

“We will, however, determine our position based on the resulting actions rather than these words alone. We have seen empty words too many times previously. We will seek a mandate from our members and from the wider fanbase before proceeding. We only wish to engage in this process should our supporters want us to.”

In the letter, the Us-based owners have assured better communication, promised squad investment and even hinted at fans owning shares in United.

Joel Glazer said: “My family and I care deeply about Manchester United. I would like to reiterate my sincere apology for mistakes made.

“We want to work together to come up with an ambitious package of measures which will transform our relationship with fans and strengthen the club.”
