Ed: Will you marry me... (long silence)... please?
Singer recalls his ‘most human’ moment when he proposed in the rain
ED SHEERAN
ED Sheeran has spoken for the first time about the day he proposed to partner Cherry Seaborn, saying it was the “most human” he has ever felt because he feared rejection.
Singer Ed, 30, explained that Cherry’s parents were together for many years before they wed, so she hadn’t grown up believing marriage was important.
He added: “I was walking into it not knowing if she was going to say ‘yes’. I got down on one knee and said ‘Will you marry me?’ and she was like ‘Are you f***ing joking?’
“There was this long silence and I just went ‘Please?’ It’s the most human I have ever felt. It is such a huge life decision to make in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, she did say ‘yes’.”
SUNSET
Speaking on Swedish show Skavlan, Ed said even the elements were against him the day he proposed to his onetime classmate in December 2017 at his farmhouse near Framlingham, Suffolk. He went on: “It was p***ing with rain and I’d built a pergola at the end of the garden to do it at sunset.
“I kept saying that we should go for a walk and she was like ‘No!’ There was a date on the ring and I was like ‘I’ve got to do it today!’ It gets to 9pm and I was like ‘For f***’s sake?’”
The Ipswich Town fans had dated since 2015.
They married in 2018 and held a huge postwedding party in a big-top at Henham Park in Suffolk.
Ed’s fourth studio LP, Equals, is out on October 29. He said that it’s a “coming-of-age record” with songs about Cherry, 29, and their year-old daughter Lyra.
