Of Cos we can target gold medal
BREAKTHROUGH Olympian Andrew Coscoran believes Ireland can go for Euro Cross gold in Dublin on December 12.
A year on from originally scheduled, the SPAR European Cross Country Championships can go ahead in eight weeks time at the Sport Ireland
Campus in Abbotstown, just the second time the event has taken place in Dublin – the 2009 championship took place in Santry.
Coscoran, who defied expectations to reach the 1500m semi-finals in Tokyo, believes a mixed relay dream team that includes Ciara Mageean, Sarah Healy, Luke Mccann and himself have a shot at topping the podium.
“The fact that usually I’m middle distanced, normally 1,500 metres, maybe 800 metres, you just use the
cross country as a base building phase but the fact that it’s in Dublin, it’s home turf I want to give it a go,” the 25-year-old said.
“We could have a good team and maybe in the mixed relay there is the possibility of putting one of our strongest teams out.
“There is a possibility of a medal, so I’m not going to turn down the chance of taking a crack at a medal.
“If we put out all our best people – Ciara Mageean, Sarah Healy, maybe Luke Mccann and myself, we could actually have a good shout of getting a medal – maybe even getting a gold.
“The other countries may not necessarily focus on it so that might be an opportunity to capitalise.”
Tickets for the 2021 SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be available through the Championship website (€8 and under 16 go free) on Monday, November 1. See www. fingaldublin2021. ie.
