TAKE A LONG DRAG OF HARLEY’S BREAKOUT

- FRASER ADDECOTT

All Harley-davidsons come with a certain image or attitude that bikers attach to them. And it’s fair to say that’s a big part of the appeal.

The Breakout oozes attitude. It’s a long, low, lean but muscular dragster-style brute, with a skinny front tyre between pushed-out forks and a huge 240mm rear.

At its heart is the Milwaukee Eight engine – a massive 1746cc of thumping V-twin power.

The low seat height means you can easily get both boots onto the ground, which inspires confidence in a machine that weighs 295kg.

The very groovy – and very small – digital dash is neatly set into the handlebar clamp. It’s fairly basic, but does include a fuel gauge and gear indicator. And don’t expect any high-tech electronics. There’s ABS, but no ride modes or traction control.

Head off and the thumping sound and feel of that big V-twin is immediately obvious.

The Breakout retains just enough vibration to let you know what you’re riding – and it feels great. With that huge rear rubber, long wheelbase and massive motor, this bike isn’t at home around town, yet I found it surprisingly manageable.

The ride position takes some getting used to. The bars are wide, flat and seem a long way from your body. I was uncomfortable and at full stretch. Then I shifted my position on the seat, leant forward from the waist – and it clicked.

Once I figured it out, I found it perfectly comfortable, even enjoyable. With oodles of torque all the way through the five speeds, the Breakout is a joy to ride on the open road. Shifting is clunky, but in a reassuring way, and overtaking is a doddle in almost any gear.

With just a single disc up front you need to employ the rear brake alongside the front for sharp stopping.

The suspension is solid but springs no surprises, with Showa forks and a rear mono-shock, adjustable for pre-load. That 240mm rear means no chucking it through corners, but I found the handling pleasing.

Choose the right line, don’t overdo it, stick with it and the Breakout won’t let you down.

This is an unusual bike in some ways and will appeal to something of a niche market, but I loved it.

In fact, it’s probably my favourite Harley.
