Women’s World Cup Qualifying
ELLA TOONE scored a hat-trick as England maintained their march towards the 2023 World
Cup finals in style.
The Manchester United forward struck twice inside the opening 12 minutes against Latvia.
The first came after the hosts failed to clear a free-kick and she then doubled her haul following good work by Bethany Mead Mead and Fran Kirby.
Toone completed her hat-trick in the 68th minute with the night’s sixth goal at the Daugava Stadium in Liepaja before being replaced by Carlotte Wubben-moy.
Ellen White, on her 99th appearance for her country, made it 3-0 in the 25th minute (below, celebrating with Toone) to take her international goals haul to 44 and draw level with Kerry Davis as the jointsecond highest England goalscorer of all time.
Millie Bright added a fourth just past the half hour mark.
Beth Mead joined in the goal fest after the interval, Rachel Daly bagged a brace and Leah Williamson (top) and Georgia Stanway were also on the scoresheet. It could have been even worse for Latvia - the Lionesses were awarded a penalty in the 38th-minute penalty when goalkeeper Enija-anna Vaivode tripped Lauren Hemp. But Vaivode made amends by saving White’s spot-kick.
White also saw a looping header hit the woodwork before she was one of four players replaced at half time.
The Lionesses now have 32 goals in four World Cup qualifying matches under head coach Sarina Wiegman. Her first three games in charge, all World Cup qualifiers, ended in 8-0, 10-0 and 4-0 wins against North Macedonia, Luxembourg and Northern Ireland respectively.
