FOOTBALL TAKES BACK SEAT AT GERS

Rangers v

Tonight, 7.45pm

AN EMOTIONAL Steven Gerrard fought back tears as he led the tributes to a man who delivered 21 major honours to the Ibrox trophy room.

The current inhabitant of the Gers manager’s office cancelled his pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s Premiership clash with Aberdeen as he reeled from the devastating news that Waler Smith, 73, had succumbed to a long illness. But Gerrard just about managed to keep himself together as he delivered a moving interview in which he mourned the passing of his Light Blues mentor.

Gerrard, who has taken counsel from Smith throughout his time in Glasgow, said his legendary predecessor had made him “a better person”.

The news of Smith’s death yesterday morning prompted an outpouring of grief and a stream of tributes from across the football globe – with Old Firm rivals Celtic plus Manchester United and Everton, where Smith had also previously worked, among those offering condolences. Pep Guardiola also issued a statement.

Gerrard said: “It is still obviously very raw. It is a very sad day for everyone at the club.

“Walter was an incredible leader, a very successful manager here at Rangers. He epitomised everything that this club stands for.

“His DNA is all over the club and it is very sad news.

“He has been right behind me since day one. I have had many lunches, dinners, coffees, chats and private times with him in my office.

“He is going to be a very big loss to a lot of people. He is decorated all over the club and he will be forever because he gave many many years to the football club.

“He loved the club, he was honest and genuine. He has made me a better person.”
