Dark side to finding love online
THIS three-part true crime series focuses on the deaths of three young people and how social media played a role in putting them in danger.
Tomorrow’s episode follows the murder in 2019 of Alex Rodda, an openly gay 15-year-old boy embarking on his first relationship.
A fling that started with Facebook flirting ended six weeks later after Alex was groomed for a sexual relationship and then bludgeoned to death with a wrench.
Wednesday’s film looks into the tragic story of Molly Mclaren, who was killed in
2017 by her ex-boyfriend.
Their relationship started on Tinder, and Molly’s ex also used social media to track her down after their split.
But the series starts tonight with the upsetting story of 22-year-old Grace Millane, a British backpacker travelling in New Zealand who went missing while on a Tinder date in Auckland in 2018.
A week after Grace’s disappearance, Jesse Kempson was arrested and later convicted of her murder and sentenced to life behind bars.
Raising questions around women’s safety, the documentary traces the night of Grace’s disappearance, the subsequent search, Kempson’s arrest and the resulting court case.
Ultimately it shines a light on the role a dating app played in bringing these two individuals together. There are also exclusive interviews with investigators close to the case as well as CCTV footage and the police interviews with Kempson.
We also see the texts and tweets between Grace, her friends and her killer in her final days.
“How’s the date going?” texted a friend. “I click with him so well. I’ll let you know what happens tomorrow,” Grace replied.
It offers up a disturbing, debatesparking insight into the dark side of social media.
