Will the Bel toll at last out West?

-

BELMULLET bid for a historic Mayo SFC success when facing down holders Knockmore in tomorrow’s final.

Should Belmullet (above) upset the odds, they will become the first maiden winners of the Moclair Cup since Ballintubber in 2010.

Back then, Ballintubber, managed by James Horan, were led by experienced Mayo star Alan Dillon and the emerging Cillian O’connor and, similarly, Belmullet’s hopes will be pinned on Ryan O’donoghue, one of Mayo’s standouts as they reached another All-ireland final this year.

The club only emerged from intermediate ranks three years ago and have made significant strides in the interim.

Knockmore, featuring Mayo stalwart Kevin Mcloughlin, won the title for the first time since 1997 last year and will bid to emulate their two-in-a-row achievement from 24 years ago.

The game is one of two live offerings on TG4 tomorrow afternoon along with the Dublin SFC final, where Kilmacud Crokes bid for a first title since 2018 against a St Jude’s side who are still seeking their first.

A win would secure a double for Crokes that was last achieved by Ballyboden St Enda’s in 2009.

A double is also on Loughmorecastleiney’s mind, something they achieved in 2013, as they go to the well again in tomorrow’s Tipperary football final having drawn the hurling final last Sunday.

There’s a significant overlap between both panels and former Munster champions Clonmel Commercials may fancy their chances on that basis amid Loughmore’s hectic schedule, with a hurling replay next weekend.

Elsewhere, Midleton chase a first Cork hurling title since 2013 against Glen Rovers while the provincial football competitions get underway in Leinster, Ulster and Connacht.
