Let’s do this together

- Yours, Siobhan

Trying to get hold of The Dark Lord on her mobile is creating family discord, which is ironic since she says I should use Discord to contact her.

Trouble is, I can’t understand the gaming app and all the emojis in the messages give me eye strain.

I start by ringing, but as teens don’t use their phones to actually speak to someone, I have to revert to old skool texts.

But I can’t tell if mobile texts are being read, so I move to Whatsapp messages, and then it becomes clear that not only are they being read, but they’re being disregarded.

By now, I’m so cross, that by the time I finally get hold of her, I’m spitting feathers over not being able to ask them something as simple as what time they need the Mummy Taxi service.

“Why don’t you ever answer my texts?” I rant when I finally speak to The Dark Lord.

“Oh I don’t read normal texts,” she lies easily. I can tell she’s fibbing because her lips are moving.

“OK, but I sent it by Whatsapp too, and you read my message at 13.02 precisely today. It’s now 17.16 and you’re only getting back to me.”

“I was busy,” she fibs again.

“But I can see you posted on social media at 14.26,” I say through gritted teeth.

“Yeah I was busy on Instagram roughly around then,” she nods, then adds unhelpfully, “You can always get me quicker on Discord. I can’t help it if you’re too old to use it,” she shrugs. “Discord is the future, Mum, don’t fight it.”

Trouble is, by the time I learn Discord, the kids will have moved on.
