Play fair... or be shown the door

-

WHEN I shop online the first option that comes up in a search is usually Amazon. Ask anyone where to get something and they’ll likely say Amazon. Well, I am trying my best not to shop with Amazon.

I work in a Hermes drop-off shop where we have a separate bag for Amazon and you should see how much is returned.

My grandson thinks Amazon Prime is wonderful as he gets next-day delivery of groceries cheaper than supermarket prices. How does it manage that?

As a pensioner I question if it’s as wonderful as everyone says. The exorbitant profits come from it being a worldwide giant with fewer overheads and avoiding paying its fair share of tax. But it’s now so powerful it’s blown the competition out of the water.

Reading your investigation that revealed Amazon’s large number of ambulance callouts (Mirror, November 24), as the NHS is funded by taxpayers, it strikes me it shouldn’t be allowed to carry on doing business here without paying more to support our services.

Online giants such as Amazon have also helped bring about the demise our high streets and the loss of thousands of decent jobs. Surely the public could do without Amazon long enough to focus their attention on contributing more to the public purse to support our infrastructure?

I suggest a boycott until Amazon and others pay their way.

Instead of blockading warehouses and playing havoc with deliveries, climate protestors should put their effort into campaigning for better conditions for Amazon workers (Mirror, November 27).

Like it or not, Amazon is here to stay because we all want cheap products – and there’s nothing wrong with that. It also provides hundreds of thousands of jobs.

But it needs to improve pay and conditions for staff and play fair when it comes to tax.

C Spencer, Chelmsford, Essex

Your report on Amazon should surprise no one. It is a company that seemingly takes all it can from a system while contributing as little as it can get away with.

It fills bins across the country with ridiculous excess packaging. These bins are emptied at the expense of every UK

council taxpayer, whether an Amazon customer or not.

It’s no wonder climate protestors blockaded the warehouses.

Stuart Magrath, Wigan

If Amazon is serious about the protecting the safety of its workers it should allow the GMB union to do a drive at its sites to recruit members and elect shop stewards and safety representatives. That would be in the best interest of the employer and employees.

Sylvia Harrop, ex-senior shop steward, Ashton-under-lyne, Lancs

Perhaps Amazon should be charged for every ambulance?

Our cash-strapped NHS cannot keep this up, while Amazon could well afford it. I am sure Amazon would sooner create better working conditions than pay every time one is called out.

Tony Howard, Salford

We all shop with Amazon because we want cheap things tomorrow. But if everyone stood together and said no more of this, then pay and conditions would improve. But that won’t happen.
