FOOL’S GOLD OR FOOL’S ERRAND?

Gers chief Wilson insists club won’t bust wage structure to keep English defender

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

ROSS WILSON insists Rangers will not break the bank to keep contract rebels such as Connor Goldson at the club.

The Ibrox defender is just four weeks away from being able to open talks with new clubs as the clock ticks down towards the final six months of his deal.

Former manager

Steven Gerrard was unable to make headway in attempts to persuade the 28-year-old to agree new terms before leaving for

Aston Villa last month.

But new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will want an answer one way or another ASAP as he prepares to measure up potential new January recruits.

However, speaking at yesterday’s AGM, sporting director Wilson (inset) insisted he was relaxed about the current state of play surrounding Gers out-of-contracts stars. But he stressed the club will not be held to ransom over wage demands.

Wilson told shareholders: “I get that player contracts is a hot topic as it’s something people are excited about.

“Generally we’re really, really relaxed about where we are with our player contracts.

“We have a clear contract model here and a clear wage structure. Anybody that signs a contract with Rangers, I can assure you, they will sign a contract within that structure. “We wouldn’t be prepared to break that structure at all because it’s important to us that we have a prudent way of working.

“However, it’s also fair to say that players can take their own view and can take their own time. And if they want a contract which is in excess of that model then that’s also OK for them to take that view.

“We’re very relaxed about that. We take a view on every contract on its own merits, providing it sits within our model.

“But what I would also say, because I have seen a lot said about this, is that I work with the group of players every day.

I see them every single day and it wouldn’t be fair on any player to look at his commitment and their focus.”
