- Women’s World Cup

ELLEN WHITE became England Women’s record goalscorer as she blasted a hat-trick in last night’s humiliation of Latvia.

The Manchester City striker (above) fired home twice early on in the World Cup qualifier at Doncaster to eclipse Kelly Smith’s 46 goal mark, before making it 48 for her country.

And the Lionesses went on to run riot as three other players followed her in going on to score trebles.

Lauren Hemp weighed in with four goals, while there were also hat-tricks for Beth Mead and Alessia Russo.

In total there were 10 different England scorers – with Jess Carter, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Bethany England (twice), Jill Scott and Jordan Nobbs also on target. The biggest cheer of the rout came when White broke the all-time scoring record and took a moment to close her eyes and take it all in while grabbing the badge on her shirt.

White, 32, said: “I feel really emotional about it.

“It’s been spoken about, breaking this record, for a long time and I feel proud.

“I feel really lucky, but I’m not stopping here – I want to keep scoring goals for England. I look up to Kelly so much – she’s a legend and is the best for me.”

Having beaten Latvia 10-0 in October, it was never expected to be a contest and England recorded their biggest competitive win to remain top of their qualifying group with six victories in six games, having scored 53 goals without reply.

The demolition job surpassed their 13-0 win against Hungary back in 2005, and boss Sarina Wiegman said: “So proud of Ellen on a night when many records were broken.”
