No Gud just flashing cash and hoping

BY DAVID ANDERSON BURNLEY’S Johann Berg Gudmundsson has warned Newcastle they cannot bank on buying their way out of trouble next month.

Toon boss Eddie Howe will be given one of the biggest war chests in world football when the January transfer window opens.

Burnley face Newcastle in a relegation showdown at St James’ Park today and Gudmundsson (right) claims attempting to rebuild a struggling team halfway through the season won’t be easy.

“I don’t think it’s simple,” he said. “You’ve got to get the right players in and January is extremely difficult to get the right player.

“Then you can sign too many players and you have to build a new team, so it’s definitely a tough project for them and it’s not started great.

“They need to start picking up points and we need to stop them. You can have a lot of money, but it takes time.” Gudmundsson added that Newcastle’s new wealth also brings pressure and they will be expected to stay up. We’re an extremely tight group, we know what we’re doing, we know what we do on the pitch,” said the Iceland winger.

“Newcastle is different. There’s a new manager in, a lot of talk around the club so the pressure is building on them.

“It will be fun to see what happens and what they do in January.” Burnley could face their toughest survival fight yet, despite Sean Dyche (below) assembling the best squad seen at Turf Moor.

“It’s going to be extremely tough, but we are confident in what we do,” said Gudmundsson.

“This league is extremely tough, but we’ve shown over the last few years what we can do. We just need to make sure we put performances in and we’ve done that.

“Now we just need to turn them into wins.”
