RONAN’S FURY AT LENS MOVE
Racing 92 v La Rochelle Tomorrow 3pm
RONAN O’GARA claims it is “shameful and unacceptable” that his La Rochelle team have to travel to Lens for their Champions Cup semi-final clash with Racing 92.
The La Defense Arena in Paris, where O’gara began his coaching career, is out of bounds this weekend due to concerts by French hip hop outfit Sexion d’assaut.
Instead, the all-french last four encounter has been moved to Lens’ Estadio Bollaert-delelis ground – not an easy trip for La Rochelle fans.
“The stands will be a bit empty,” said O’gara, who is boss this year after helping the club to reach the 2021 final as defence coach.
“That is shameful and unacceptable. I spare a thought for our supporters who must travel seven hours by road in order to support their team because there are few flights going to Lens.
“I know that because my wife tried to find one but she failed. Setting that aside, I remain focused on the match which presents a great opportunity for us to pave the way to write a new page of history for the club and break new ground.”
O’gara was disappointed that his club fell at the last hurdle at the hands of Toulouse last year but he quickly moved on.
“The past does not interest me anymore,” stated the Corkman. “It is true Racing 92 has lost three finals, therefore I think there will be a lot of frustration on their part, notably the last one they just lost out to Exeter behind closed doors in 2020.
“We’re in the last four but I would like to think we will be in the final and then be the ‘last man standing’.
“There comes a time when you have to assume your status but that will not change anything, whether it be in the preparation or how you approach this match.
“The match outcome will hinge on little details, primarily on how one copes with the pressure and how to respond to it. But we do
have that experience now.”
