KELLY’S EYE ON CUP AND A EURO SPOT

- BY IAN WINROW

CHLOE KELLY is targeting Wembley FA Cup glory to draw a line under her injury nightmare – and strengthen her claims for a place in England’s Euro 2022 squad.

The Manchester City striker spent almost a year on the sidelines after damaging knee ligaments last May.

But after making her return in

April, Kelly (above) is now aiming to wrap up the campaign by helping City to a domestic cup double over WSL champions Chelsea.

Kelly said: “I feel like a kid at the minute. I don’t want the season to end but when you have that spell on the sidelines, when you come back, you just appreciate it so much more.

“I knew that I’d get back and I’d be on the pitch back to my best again.

“So I’m just enjoying every minute back on the pitch and I’m hungry to learn and I’m hungry to win trophies.”

Gareth Taylor’s side go into tomorrow’s final boosted by the memory of their 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the Continental Cup final earlier this season. That was City’s first victory over Chelsea’s Emma Hayes (above) in nine attempts.

And both teams go into the final on a high after the final day of the league season when City clinched a Champions League place and Chelsea wrapped up a third successive title.

Kelly said: “We beat them in the Continental Cup already this season and that gives us a bit of confidence as well going into the game.

“Of course I want to be at that Euros. That’s what I’m fighting for at the minute – and each game is a stepping stone to getting there.”

The two clubs have traded ownership of the Women’s FA Cup for the last five years

And Chelsea boss Hayes admits that has only strengthened the rivalry between the two sides.

She said: “The Continental Cup was the first time we’d ever played them in a final, following numerous semifinal meetings. So it’s nice that we’ll get to run it back again on the biggest stage in football.”
