CAR’ RUNNING IN TAILTEANN CUP AS MCGINLEY QUITS

- BY KEVIN EGAN

CARLOW enjoyed a first Championship win in four years as they claimed a shock win over Tipperary yesterday in the Tailteann Cup.

The Premier won easily when the two sides met in the League and started well at Netwatch Cullen Park too with Martin Kehoe’s goal opening the scoring.

Niall Hickey fired Carlow right back into the game with a goal before half time and Carlow were the dominant since for most of the second half, scores from Colm Hulton, Seanie Bambrick and Jamie Clarke helping them to a 1-12 to 1-10 win.

Westmeath ended Laois’ dismal year with a 1-13 to 0-13 win at MW

Hire O’moore Park.

The Lake County started well with scores from John Heslin and Luke Loughlin, but a straight red card for full back Kevin Maguire helped Laois go three up early in the second half.

A four minutes spell saw Sam Mccartan take advantage of a poor kickout to fire in a Westmeath goal, then Laois’ Seán

O’flynn’s second yellow card eliminated their numerical advantage and the game was up.

Offaly easily beat Wicklow at O’connor Park - 0-18 to 0-10.

The visitors scored just one point from play as the Rhode trio of Niall Mcnamee (0-5), Rúairí Mcnamee (0-3) and Anton Sullivan (0-2) all filled their boots.

Sligo, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Cavan picked up wins on Saturday.

As expected, Cavan cruised past Down at Kingspan Breffni, 0-24 to 1-12, despite conceding a goal to Rúairí O’hare on Down’s first attack.

Goalkeeper Raymond Galligan saved two penalties and kicked two first half points as Cavan moved 0-13 to 1-3 clear by half-time.

Ultan Kelm made his first appearance of the year for Fermanagh after a long battle with a hip injury which scuppered his move to the AFL and he proved to be the match winner in Longford.

His goal in the closing stages gave his team a 1-12 to 0-12 win.

Sligo needed an Alan Reilly (left) point in the sixth minute of added time to force a draw and extra time against London.

Brian Egan’s goal and Aidan Devaney’s penalty save were the key moments in overtime as Sligo won 3-15 to 2-16.

In Carrick-on-shannon, Antrim missed 20 scoring chances, while goals from Shane Moran and Jack Heslin in either half gave Leitrim to a 2-14 to 1-12 win. Antrim boss Enda Mcginley stepped down in the wake of the game.
