Jubilant over the Queen’s Jubilee

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ IN a radio broadcast from Cape Town, South Africa, on her 21st birthday 75 years ago, the then Princess Elizabeth declared she would dedicate her life to serving the nation and Commonwealth and she has kept her word.

I would suggest she is not only one of the longest serving, but the most exemplary head of state the world has ever seen.

The mere thought of an Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson for 70 years is an abomination. As our current PM, and the Queen’s 14th, and with his equally unsavoury sycophants keeping him in office, there are no words to describe him suitable for a family newspaper.

■ Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor has kept her promise and served her beloved country and Commonwealth with dignity and respect for 70 years. Her Majesty had led us through so many crises, while putting her own sorrows on the back burner to work effortlessly on our behalf without a shred of self-pity. I, like so many others, at this time of the Jubilee celebrations, feel so proud to have lived in this second Elizabethan age, and, hope she will reign for more years yet. Ashley Smith, March, Cambs ■ It will be lovely to see Harry and Meghan at the celebrations, in spite of the debate over whether they should have come or not. In reality, it is in the best interest of the Royals that they have.

Opinion is split over what the future of the monarchy should be once

our Queen steps aside and there are demographic divides. If the Royal Family does not want a complete disconnect with the next generation they should embrace this young couple, not alienate them.

■ As we mindlessly blunder into the Jubilee “celebrations”, as we seem to mindlessly blunder into a lot of things, has anyone stopped to ask if it’s appropriate? There is a horrific war in Europe, there is a cost-of-living crisis – people can’t afford to heat their homes or eat.

The NHS is on its knees and families are sinking into poverty and debt. Is this really the time for the nation to be gloating over unearned wealth and privilege? It’s in the worst possible taste to me.

■ For this long Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, let’s focus all our attention on our remarkable

Queen and all she has achieved. For once, let’s forget about Boris, Partygate, Megxit and Prince Andrew and have a wonderful weekend celebrating all that’s good about this great country.

Pauline Lee, Doncaster

■ Whether you’re a royalist or not, I think we can all agree our Queen is an exceptional lady who always puts her country first. I can’t think of any other head of state who can claim to have served their country in such a steadfast and loyal way.

V Martin, Birmingham

■ It’s about time we did away with this outdated institution we call the monarchy.

We keep being told that the Queen has given 70 years of service. I prefer to describe it as a lifetime of living in the lap of luxury, never having to worry about paying a bill and being waited on hand and foot – all because she was lucky enough to be born in the right bed.

Roll on the republic!
