Let’s do this together

The dog of the moment, the Pembroke Welsh corgi, is having its day in the sun as we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with all sorts of souvenir tat covered in Her Majesty’s favourite breed.

The Kennel Club has even reported that the royal dog, which was listed as “vulnerable” less than a decade ago, has recorded the highest puppy registrations in 30 years.

However, in my limited experience, I don’t think there’s ever been anything vulnerable about the Welsh corgi – a breed better known for its anger issues than empathy, especially with other animals.

The only time my Boris got savaged, it was by a very nasty corgi. His owner was very apologetic, and even admitted: “I’ve always had corgis and they’re very bad tempered.”

We stood and chatted about the breed, and he came to the very unscientific conclusion that they had a chip on their shoulders about having stunted legs.

“A sort of Napoleon complex – but for dogs,” he declared.

Meanwhile, I bared my teeth and growled at his corgi in case he wanted to come back for another mauling. A mother’s love for their pooch knows no bounds.

The only other mutt that attacked Boris was my lovely friend Anne’s Bedlington terrier, Percy. The little sod took an instant dislike to my cuddly Boz, and sunk his teeth into the pug’s neck, which, like his brain, is his least vulnerable spot.

The scruffy-haired skinny beast left a couple of holes in my dog’s chunky neck, although the skin’s so thick there I don’t think Boz even felt it.

I’ve now renamed Anne’s terrier Ripper – which mortifies my vicar’s daughter friend.

I told her she’ll have to ask her dad’s congregation to pray for her dog’s spiritual guidance, or better still, get him a muzzle. She keeps him on a very tight leash these days.

But Boris gets his own back when we pass by Ripper’s house sometimes. He goes crazy barking at Boris through the window, but the pug just calmly goes over and widdles on the flowers – right under his nose.
