LIV through weird times

-

AS possibly the toughest of them all to win, the US Open will be a welcome reminder that history is a key factor in any sport.

All the talk last week was about something different.

Change is always difficult.

I am firmly on the fence when it comes to the challenge that LIV GOLF presents to the world of professional golf.

I love the sport, love working and watching it on TV.

Regarding LIV GOLF, I don’t agree with the source of the money or the manner in how it is presented.

But I do think the PGA Tour are also using that as a smoke screen because they finally have competition and that’s a problem they have never had previously.

Before now, they simply cherry picked the best talent from worldwide golf.

Furthermore, ‘grow the game’ is a bullshit line that is easy to peddle for all tours.

Kids want to be like the stars they see on the TV. Growing the game is getting people inspired to play the sport. The hard work is never done by the superstars – it is done at grass roots level.

Club professionals teaching kids how to play golf, parents and club volunteers helping run competitions and tournaments as they advance, that’s what grows the game.

Trying to score political points for one Tour against the other last week reeked of self interest.

This is the first time ever that the PGA Tour has competition for its superstar players. Every other Tour has suffered in terms of developing players or giving them a stage until they ultimately lose them to the

PGA Tour.

Is LIV GOLF good for the game? No.

Is competition good for the game? Yes, absolutely.
