Honoured to be so Beefed up

featured on the honours boards for five-wicket hauls and centuries at Lord’s – halfway to Sir Ian Botham’s record of 10 entries.

Broad, now on 581 Test wickets, said: “Beefy had a love affair with this place – he was phenomenal, and Jimmy (Anderson) has got his name up there a lot as well.

“You can’t underestimate the feeling of seeing your name on the Lord’s honours board as it’s the most famous.

“I’ve had a decent gap since my last entry, but I’ve always loved playing here and the buzz of walking through the Long Room to get on the pitch.

“When you win the toss and bowl, ultimately you’re looking to bowl them out on the first day, so that’s a big tick for our bowling attack.

“And the way our top three went about our reply this evening was exactly the mind-set Baz and Stokesy want – positive, aggressive and it put the bowlers under pressure.”

Broad may not be in the starting XI for the Ashes opener against Australia on June 16, but he insisted: “We’re going to need an armoury of bowlers because it’s unrealistic to think any bowler will be able to play six Test matches in a row.

“I love Ashes cricket but my mind-set’s always the same - to impact the game. We need a few of us to be ripe and ready and we know we’ll get a chance. The great thing about the changing room is we all feel in it together and as a squad.”

England were held up on their journey to Lord’s from their hotel by Just Stop Oil protesters on a go-slow.

But Broad laughed: “It only caused a five-minute delay and it only annoyed Jonny Bairstow.”
