Don’t be fooled by Budget gifts

-

Britain is broken and the Tories broke it. Nothing works. Millions can’t get to see their local doctor and you can’t go to A&E instead as waiting times are at a record level.

More than seven million are on waiting lists for hospital treatment and millions can’t get an NHS dentist. Many parents desperately need to work but can’t get childcare. The cost of living continues to rise as we go into recession again – Rishi Sunak’s recession.

Gas and electricity prices are still high while fat cat energy bosses enjoy record profits – and let’s not forget Liz Truss’s disastrous mini Budget crashed the economy and put mortgages up. Now they want to bribe you with tax cuts in the Budget. Don’t trust them.

David Bodimeade, Rayleigh, Essex

Why do the Tories try to tip the scales by handing out tax cuts before an election?

People need to consider all that has happened since they came to power in 2010, including their mishandling of the pandemic. They didn’t lock down early enough, then there was Partygate and the PPE scandal with hundreds of millions wasted. On top of that we had Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng wrecking the economy, and then there was the Post Office scandal.

The only people who benefit from tax cuts are those on a high income, so I hope people take this into account before they put their cross on the ballot paper when the election comes around.

Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt are desperately looking at what they can do to get more people to vote for them. This is completely missing the point.

If the Conservatives had been making decisions to make the lives of ordinary working people better – such as improving the NHS, recruiting more dentists and easing the cost of living crisis – rather than looking at what will get them more votes, they would not be in this situation.

Fourteen years of poor leadership and poor decisions have lead to the current situation. Eight or 10 months is not going to be enough time to make any difference.

Barry Foster, Wigan

Jeremy Hunt is deluded if he really thinks that people want tax cuts. What we want, and desperately need, is the opposite, which is good investment into public services such as the NHS, the police and schools. The list is endless. Tax cuts will, as usual, only benefit the rich. Talk about “I’m alright Jack!”

D Richens, South East London

Tax cuts aren’t the way to build a sustainable economy as they reward the rich, widen inequality and sow the seeds of discontent.

We need a fair system of tax, not reward and punishment. We don’t need clever tax loopholes for the rich subsidised by ordinary people. The rich must pay their fair share of taxes.

There will be a general election at some time later this year. We are already seeing a desperate Prime Minister and his colleagues throwing up smokescreens in an attempt to distract us from thinking about 14 years of inept Conservative government. Best to ignore all they say from now on.

Clive Osman, Nuneaton Warwickshire

Any concessions this inept Government gives in the Budget will be clawed back immediately if they manage to con the public into re-electing them. I just hope everyone sees through their devious methods.

Roy Tandy, Liverpool
