And the new batch of bakers are already a bit stressed out – one has been dreaming about being chased by cakes, another confesses to shouting at pies, while another wants to ask Mary to be her nan.

Tonight we’re just getting the measure of them. They are PE teacher Candice, 31, garden designer Jane, 61, finance worker Selasi, 30, ex-primary school teacher Val, 66, politics and economics student Michael, 20, teaching assistant Benjamina Ebuehi, 23, church minister Lee, 67, support worker Rav, 28, nurse Kate, 37, aerospace engineer Andrew, 25, hairdresse­r Louise, 46, and Tom, 26, who works for the Royal Society of Arts. All are vying for the incredible success achieved by last year’s winner Nadiya Hussain, who became a national sweetheart, even baking the Queen’s 90th birthday cake. In fact, stay tuned tonight – she’s got her own show, The Chronicles Of Nadiya. But back to the competitio­n in hand, and it’s Cake Week, which sees three challenges involving a lot of drizzle – and I’m not talking about the rain.
