MILITANTS killed at least two people and injured more than 12 after storming the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul.

Students and staff trapped in the walled campus waited for more than an hour for armed police to arrive.

A university official said: “Several gunmen attacked the American University in Kabul and there are reports of gunfire and explosions.

“They are inside the compound and there are foreign professors along with hundreds of students.”

According to one student, several of his classmates were killed and wounded.

A number of professors and renowned press photographer Massoud Hossaini were hiding as attackers stalked the campus.

Hossaini tweeted “This maybe my last tweets” but later escaped unharmed.

The attack began at around 7.30pm local time yesterday (4pm UK time).

The university opened in 2006 and was a project by former First Lady Laura Bush, who helped launch the institution on a 2005 visit.
