Gun­men kill 2, in­jure 12 in Afghanistan uni ram­page

MIL­I­TANTS killed at least two peo­ple and in­jured more than 12 af­ter storm­ing the Amer­i­can Univer­sity of Afghanistan in Kabul.

Stu­dents and staff trapped in the walled cam­pus waited for more than an hour for armed po­lice to ar­rive.

A univer­sity of­fi­cial said: “Sev­eral gun­men at­tacked the Amer­i­can Univer­sity in Kabul and there are re­ports of gun­fire and ex­plo­sions.

“They are in­side the com­pound and there are for­eign pro­fes­sors along with hun­dreds of stu­dents.”

Ac­cord­ing to one stu­dent, sev­eral of his class­mates were killed and wounded.

A num­ber of pro­fes­sors and renowned press pho­tog­ra­pher Mas­soud Hos­saini were hid­ing as at­tack­ers stalked the cam­pus.

Hos­saini tweeted “This maybe my last tweets” but later es­caped un­harmed.

The at­tack be­gan at around 7.30pm lo­cal time yes­ter­day (4pm UK time).

The univer­sity opened in 2006 and was a project by for­mer First Lady Laura Bush, who helped launch the in­sti­tu­tion on a 2005 visit.
