72 YEARS AGO (1944)

Af­ter four years, Paris was lib­er­ated when the Ger­mans sur­ren­dered. Free French leader Gen­eral Charles de Gaulle told the na­tion: “I wish sim­ply from the bot­tom of my heart to say to you, Vive Paris!”

19 YEARS AGO (1997)

East Ger­man leader, Egon Krenz, was con­victed of set­ting up a shoot-to-kill pol­icy against peo­ple try­ing to flee his coun­try via the Berlin Wall. He was sen­tenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.
