Coffee urge ‘in our DNA’

-

HOW much coffee we crave could lie in our genes.

People with a DNA variation in a gene called PDSS2 were found to drink fewer cups, research has revealed.

The gene is thought to reduce cells’ ability to break down caffeine, letting it stay in the body longer and delivering a powerful “hit”.

A study of Italians found those with the variation drank one cup fewer a day.

Edinburgh University, which played a part in the study, told Scientific Reports: “Our drive to drink coffee may be in our genes.”
