THURSDAY FOR SUCCESS

Jose not a fan but Herrera insists: We are in it to win it

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

ANDER HERRERA insists Manchester United will take the Europa League seriously ahead of today’s draw for the group stage.

United find themselves in UEFA’s second tier competition for only the third time in their history, after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

The Reds failed to make an impression on the tournament in 2012 – going out to Athletic Bilbao in the last 16 – while they were dumped out by arch rivals Liverpool last season at the same stage.

United boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he would prefer to be in the Champions League rather than face potentially tough trips on Thursday nights.

But midfielder Herrera (right) said the players will do all they can to win the Europa League. ”I think it’s a very enjoyable competition and we want to fight for every competition we have this season,” he said.

“The Europa League has become more important every season – UEFA has worked very well on that.

“I think we’re the biggest club in the draw and we have to respect our history. We want to fight for that title and we’re very excited to see the draw.

“The players want as many games as possible, so we have the chance to play every Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday.

“It’s very important for us. We can play against big teams as well.

“I have the chance to play against my former team Athletic Bilbao and I think it’s a very good competition.”
