TERRIER SMITH DREAMS OF GOING BACK TO CITY
SIMON BIRD TOMMY SMITH wants promotion to the Premier League this season – and a chance to prove himself again to Manchester City.
The Huddersfield rightback spent his teenage years at City, but he was one of the local lads who couldn’t get a look in as the Abu Dhabi billions flooded in and bought the likes of Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany.
Smith is part of David Wagner’s high-flying Huddersfield looking to spring a surprise at the top of the Championship.
He said: “Getting to the top league and playing City is an incentive – the Premier League is the pinnacle.
“I was at City from when I was 11. I played for the reserves. It was great to be there and see all the changes.
“But they pay a lot of money for these players and they are all internationals. And it became difficult for me and a lot of the other lads who were there at the time.”
Huddersfield are growing up under Wagner and Smith has benefitted from double training sessions and highenergy football. He added: “We rarely have days off but it is a bunch of lads who want to work hard and do well.
“We were top of the league for a couple of weeks and to be up in the play-offs after 20 games is a good achievement that we can build on. It’s a good club and I love it here.”
