WESTWOOD SAVED BY LEGAL AID

- BY TIM EVERSHED

KEIREN WESTWOOD thanked the new double jeopardy rule for giving him a second chance against Forest.

The Wednesday keeper hauled down Ben Brereton to give away a penalty but was spared a red card under the law brought in this season.

And he made the most of his opportunity, guessing right to deny Ross McCormack from the spot. His save set up Wednesday’s fourth win in a row to pull clear of the pack chasing play-off places.

Two stunning volleys from Almen Abdi (above) and Fernando Forestieri completed the victory.

“I’m glad I saved the penalty but he probably should never have been in one-on-one to start off with,” said Westwood (above).“I stood my ground but it was a penalty and with the new rules now it’s not a sending off as you can’t be double penalised.

“I do my homework and although you never know where someone is going to put it for sure, the homework paid off. The decision gave me an opportunity and it doesn’t kill the game. It’s a lot better rule, obviously I’m going to say that after today.

“I made a genuine attempt to play the ball so it is the correct decision. The Forest fans weren’t happy but it’s the rules.

“We ground it out and that’s becoming a habit, grinding out victories. That’s four in a row.

“We’re seven points clear in the play-offs with a game in hand coming up on Tuesday.”

Forest pulled a goal back through Ben Osborn but were left rueing the penalty miss.

It was especially tough for goalkeeper Jordan Smith, 22, who impressed on debut but was beaten by two superb strikes. He said: “It seems to be the way it’s gone this season, that we’ve been hit by a few wonder goals.”
