David Peach fired Saints in front at Wembley but a Garry Birtles double and another from Tony Woodcock for holders and soonto-be Euro champs Forest meant Nick Holmes’ late reply was just a consolation.
1976 FA Cup Saints 1 Man United 0
Peter Rodrigues (below) received the trophy after Bobby Stokes beat United keeper Alex Stepney with a low left-footer from outside the box to win it for the underdogs and be immortalised on the south coast.

Saints became the last non-league team to reach the final but were edged out by a Blades team containing Alf Common, who would soon become football’s first £1,000 player.
