Kay could give duo run for their money

- IAN HYLAND

I couldn’t tell where the prank began and the PR stunt for Jamie ended

They may have won more TV awards than Sutton United’s former reserve goalie has had hot pies. They may be the undisputed kings of small-screen entertainment.

But Ant & Dec cannot control the unexpected. Which is why they were powerless to stop that woman mouthing “f*** off” – twice – when they surprised her while she was enjoying a foot spa in her living room.

Dec later apologised for her language, but inside he must have been fist-pumping like Tim Henman on crack.

He knows this unpredictable live element is a big reason why Saturday Night Takeaway is still the most bankable Saturday night show in town. If the BBC was smart, it would take a look at the way Peter Kay saved the show over at the Let It Shine final and give him whatever he wants to take on Ant & Dec.

They could certainly use the competition. Saturday’s opener wasn’t their worst, but it was nowhere near their best.

Too many of the same old ITV faces. Ant Versus Dec was basically Total Ninja Wipeout in dinosaur suits. And that lame End Of The Show Show routine with Jennifer Hudson was real back-of-a-fag-packet stuff. As for the Undercover segment, I couldn’t really tell where the fun prank began and the PR stunt for Jamie Oliver’s restaurant business ended.

Meanwhile, Scarlett Moffatt may need to add a disclaimer to “Scarlett could be coming to your door”. *As long as you live a short helicopter ride away from the studio.
