COACH’S PRAISE FOR SUPER-SIX

-

FINAL SHOOTOUT Will with Jason, Clara, Michelle, Tanya, Lia & Hayley BLIGH SPIRIT Hardman Ant Middleton skippers the boat in C4’s Mutiny Here are Will’s team of six – but just three will make it to the live finals.

He says of Jason Jones, 32: “If you close your eyes you’ve got John Legend or Usher, you don’t see the call centre guy.” Spanish-born Clara Hurtado, 20, is “another J-Lo or Shakira” while Tanya Lacey, 31, “is a

Even before it set sail last night, Channel 4’s nautical challenge Mutiny had been called the most gruelling reality show in TV history. That’s a bold – and so far, unproven – claim which will certainly be news to anyone who has ever appeared on a reality show with the likes of Gemma Collins or Stephen Bear.

Mutiny has crashed into my top three water-based telly programmes at the moment, ahead of C5’s Carry On Barging but trailing in the majestic wake of C5’s Cruising With Jane McDonald.

The role of Bligh is filled by TV’s newest hardman, Ant Middleton from SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Round-the-world sailor Conrad Humphrys is his right-hand man and the rest of the crew is seven ordinary blokes with varying degrees of sailing experience. That’s nine men eating, sleeping and a couple of other things ending in “ing” on a tiny 23ft boat for 48 days.

Despite the fact that we already know they all survived, Mutiny still manages to conjure up enough drama and tension to make the hour, erm, sail by. The only real surprise – given that it is on such a notoriously right-on channel – is that there are no women on board.

However, I am guessing this was more to do with historical accuracy than sexism.

Maybe C4 should do a female version next year. Just give that boat a chance to air out a bit first, eh?
