Beach boy Roy wants to finish with big ton against Windies today

- FROM DEAN WILSON Cricket Correspondent in Barbados

JASON ROY is out to make waves in Barbados today... after being thrown about by them on Tuesday.

Roy admitted he is more of a water-baby than a Pirate of the Caribbean after a day in the surf with his partner and fellow team-mates.

At 2-0 up in the series, England already have the series won.

But, come match day, Roy’s focus is on completing a first whitewash in the Windies and getting the giant score to secure it.

The powerful opener has been in decent form, but is still missing that elusive hundred to go with all his 50s and he wants to change that.

“I was on the beach yesterday and enjoyed myself,” said Roy, who also revealed his delight at the return of Kevin Pietersen to Surrey for this summer’s T20s.

“I got brought up on the beach in South Africa, I am a waterbaby, so I have really enjoyed this tour.

“It is incredible to be able to jump out of bed and have a swim or walk – it’s a beautiful place. It is a great place to relax.

“There are challenges in the subcontinent when you are confined to your room, but not here.

“We have got a big game and want to make it 3-0. I am getting good starts, but I want to crack on.

“I have said before, 50s and 60s and 70s don’t necessarily always win you games, big hundreds win you games and that’s what I want, so tomorrow is a huge opportunity for me to convert a 50.

“I want to be known as a guy who will win matches and score big hundreds... be that solid guy at the top of the order.”

Roy is expected to resume his opening partnership with Alex Hales, currently the third most successful for England behind Alastair Cook and Ian Bell, and Marcus Trescothick and Nick Knight.

“Halesy and I kind of go out there and attack from ball one,” he added.

“If those are the records, then those are the records.”
