10 to 2.. time Wenger went

-

CONTRAST Arsenal’s capitulation, after trailing by four goals from the first leg of their Champions League tie, with Barcelona’s astonishing fightback from the same deficit.

What does it say about Arsenal that they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich while Barcelona somehow turned it around against Paris Saint-Germain to win 6-5?

To me, it suggests something needs to change at the Emirates – unless the board are happy with a top-four finish and the Champions League group phase every year.

I’m not saying I saw it coming, but I thought it might be possible for Barcelona to produce a turnaround.

But the best I expected of Arsenal was gallant failure – a win on the night, but not quite enough, which has often been the manner of their exits from Europe in the last 10 years.

Despite an early goal, they didn’t even salvage any pride – and don’t try to blame the referee. The players must look at themselves and how they surrendered in both legs.

As for Arsene Wenger, the fractures among Arsenal’s support appear to be getting wider.

It’s why I have said he should announce whether he is staying or going – because the hostility towards him seems to be getting worse and he doesn’t deserve to end his time there with the fans at war.

For the sake of his health, if nothing else, I just feel it is time for the Gunners to grasp the nettle and change direction.

I read somewhere that Wenger has earned nearly £100million since Arsenal last won the title and that’s a big price to pay for going from Invincibles to also-rans.
