NOW JACK IS OUT IN COLD FOR CHERRIES

- BY ALEX CROOK

SNUBBED by England, Jack Wilshere has now been told he must fight for his Bournemouth place.

Arsenal ace Wilshere joined the Cherries on loan last summer in a surprise move to help keep his Three Lions jersey.

But, after being benched for Bournemouth’s last two games, the midfielder was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for next week’s matches with Germany and Lithuania.

Wilshere – who has not played for his country since the Iceland debacle at Euro 2016 – is likely to find himself out in the cold again when the south coast side host Swansea tonight.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, explaining why Wilshere has been sidelined, said: “Jack felt his ankle against Manchester City and we decided to manage that process. He wasn’t injured but Jack knows his body very well and when he feels something we just ease off with him.

“The team then got a very good result against Manchester United with a slightly different system.”

Wilshere (above) came on as an 85th-minute substitute in the 3-2 win against West Ham last week and Howe went on: “I love Jack to bits as a player and he showed his quality coming off the bench against West Ham.

“Jack is a terrific option to have, whether he is starting or coming off the bench, that is the quality of player we have. His reaction when he came on demonstrates where he is mentally.

“I think he showed last week just how important he was by coming on and playing a pivotal role in the third goal.

“It was a great goal for us and Jack showed his quality in that moment.

“All the players here know they will be picked on merit.”

Howe reckons Wilshere still has to reach his very best form for Bournemouth.

“I’ve been very consistent throughout the season in saying that Jack has been performing very well for us,” he said.

“The only question mark over him before he came here was his ability to play consecutive games and to keep fit and I think he has done that.

“But I still feel there is a lot more to come.”
