Incredible emergency services beyond praise T Ritchie, Wirral, Merseyside

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

It was only a matter of time before the terrorists hit our capital again. I feel so sad for the victims. However, the emergency services, which Prime Minister Theresa May and her Tory cronies are determined to cut back, were on the scene in minutes.

The doctors and nurses from nearby St Thomas’ Hospital ran out towards the carnage to do what they could for the victims, while the police did a magnificent job in getting people to safety.

These are the services Mrs May continues to undermine. I pray for

the injured, dead and bereaved.

# What pains me the most about this awful terror attack is that PC Keith Palmer lost his life doing a job he loved and which provided for his family. Yet some inside the building he was protecting are cutting the jobs of police officers and other emergency services workers – it seems they take them for granted. After this pointless attack I just hope they realise how much these unsung heroes do to protect them. Rest in peace all those who lost their lives to warped opinions, religious views and politics.

# I felt a great sadness as I watched the atrocities unfold in London. However, I feel immensely proud at the response of the medics from St Thomas’ Hospital who did what they could to help the injured. This was the NHS at its very best, and the medics’ behaviour was typical of this truly great service.

Hilary Milne, Wirral, Merseyside

# I have the highest respect for everyone who dealt with Wednesday’s sickening attack and the police officer who paid with his life. May he and the others who died rest in peace – my heart goes out to their families and friends, and everyone else affected.

Budgets for the emergency services should be increased.

My eight-year-old daughter saw the news and asked, “What if it happens near us?”

I told her the police would be straight on it and get the bad people. But the truth is they may not due to service reductions after all the funding cuts.

Mea Stephenson, Hull

# After Wednesday’s terrible terror attack I wonder whether the Government will now think again about its catastrophic austerity cuts to our wonderful emergency services. All the services involved, particularly the police who sadly lost one of their officers, were absolutely brilliant in their response.

Perhaps Theresa May will now rethink her position after seeing the bravery shown.

Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

# This attack should be a wake-up call for Theresa May that the police and NHS deserve more funding. Those involved deserve the utmost praise for their bravery and care of the victims of this atrocity.

They risked their lives to protect the streets of London. Well done to all of them.

April Sykes, Manchester

# The emergency services are a credit to our country. These professionals risked their lives to protect those in power. I hope the MPs will reflect on recent events when considering more cuts.

Karen McCaffery, via Facebook

# Regarding the unnecessary loss of life in the horrific attack at the heart of Westminster, is this not a wake-up call to Mrs May and her government to stop cutting our police, army and border force?

We need to employ these people to protect this country. I fear continued cuts will result in even more lives lost.

C Chapman, Sheffield

# The fact that a single man, a car and a knife can create such devastation and loss of life is terrifying. How do you prepare for a twisted mind coupled with murderous intent? It is absolutely impossible.

All we have is our resolve and our determination not to let these twisted people disrupt our everyday life and our democracy.

Roger Grant Thurnscoe, South Yorks

# Our heartfelt condolences must go out to the victims, and their families, of the vile and cowardly atrocity that took place in London on Wednesday.

If there were others who were involved in the planning of this incident, other than the cowardly perpetrator, I hope they will be dealt with swiftly.
