BBC1, 9.15am For the first time in Britain’s history there are more people aged over 60 than under 16. But there are some issues for this ageing population.

In this series, on every morning this week, celebs get to the bottom of key concerns such as keeping healthy, making your voice heard and staying social.

Actress Maureen Lipman, 70, heads back to her home town of Hull in today’s episode to find out how older people can avoid loneliness. It’s a subject close to her heart after Maureen’s husband of over 30 years, the playwright Jack Rosenthal, died of cancer in 2004.

Maureen says: “It was tempting to close the door on the world and retreat into isolation, but the answer to staying social for me was work. I want to find out what people of my generation do to stay connected.”

In Hull she meets volunteers at the Royal Voluntary Service club who help older people with support and social events. And she talks to men who have found companionship in a huge shed. CHECK IN Giles and Monica
