Red tape may boost booze smuggling

-

DELAYS caused by Hard Brexit red tape may lead to gridlocked ports and alcohol smuggling, says a trade body.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association fears the UK quitting the EU customs union will double the volume of cargo to be checked at British ports. And it is calling for measures to ensure the free flow of booze between nations. WSTA customs expert David Richardson said if lorries are held at ports goods will not get to market. He said: “This will lead to bootlegging. Criminals will find alternative methods of getting alcohol in. It’s vital Government maintains the free flow of trade between the UK and Europe and reassures industry with an early solution.” Some 55% of the 1.8 billion bottles of wine the UK imports a year is from the EU.

There are fears extra customs checks may up the cost of imported goods, even if Britain signs a free trade deal with the EU.

Senior customs officials have warned prices may rise by 24%.
