McDERMOTT: I NEEDED SURGERY AFTER A STROKE

- BY MIKE WALTERS

LIVERPOOL legend Terry McDermott today reveals he required surgery after suffering a minor stroke last year – days after his 65th birthday. The three-time European Cup winner (left), whose autobiography is serialised in Mirror Sport this week, was treated in December. The former England midfielder, who also won five

league titles at Anfield, had twice noticed his speech slurring and a tingling sensation in his lip.

Within 48 hours of going to hospital for tests, McDermott underwent a three-hour operation in Newcastle and was restored to full health by Christmas.

He admitted: “An experience like that does make you look at life differently.

“I’d had a mini-stroke because one of the arteries in my neck was up to 69 per cent blocked. If it had not been diagnosed and treated immediately, I would have had a fully-blown stroke.

“I’m now fitted with a piece of cow’s membrane to keep the artery flowing.”
