Chelsea can’t count title chickens

exist, but I think it is easier for Tottenham to take points.

“Man United will be motivated because they are playing against Chelsea. Every team wants to beat us.”

It has become a fascinating two-horse race with Tottenham refusing to give up the chase.

But Chelsea are not looking like a side about to crumble.

At a ground where Tottenham Arsenal and Liverpool have all failed to win this season, Conte’s men produced a performance of champions, efficient even without being exhilarating.

They took an early lead when Diego Costa’s shot was deflected in off Adam Smith. Eden Hazard’s brilliant second should have made it safe but then came a mini-wobble after Josh King pulled one back for the Cherries before half-time. That was the cue for Chelsea’s character and resilience to shine through. Even with Costa way below his best, the Blues still looked in control. Marcos Alonso, the best player on the pitch, curled a fabulous freekick into the top corner (the Spaniard is congratulated, above) and that was job done. Chelsea fans sang antiTottenham songs throughout, but for Spurs fans Arsenal are the team to hate.

London rivalries are as difficult to understand as Mourinho’s spat with his successors at Chelsea.

It is like he resents anyone threatening his status as Chelsea’s Special One.

But what Conte has done this season, turning Chelsea from under-achievers into a unified band of winners, deserves the highest praise.

That is why no game should intimidate Chelsea and it is also why Conte believes they can finish the season in style.

The Italian added: “Nobody thought that Chelsea could fight for the title but we are top of the league.”
